Tainaner Ensemble - Anping, our town

The photos in this article all belong to Tainaner Ensemble.

05. Oct0ber, Saturday.
I went to Tainan Municipal Cultural Center with my friend
to watch "Anping, our Town",
the new musical of Tainaner Ensemble.

Opening, the photos of old Anping
projected on the big wooden setting,
the atmosphere appeared with
Pao-Chang Tsai's beautiful voice.
The members played the people in Anping,
with the amazing sound imitating skills,
the musical is fabulous from the very beginning.

The musical has a great diversity of content.
Races, love, life and death,
human nature, the hesitation to the future,
and the sorrow for losing and leaving.

After the performance,
the leader Lee dropped his tears while talking.
It's probably a kind of emotion
that mixed of hard-working, moved...etc.
Maybe as a person grown up in Tainan,
he has a different feeling while looking at Anping nowadays.

To sum up,
this is a simple musical.
Without splendid lighting and costume,
the script truly describes the way life was
and the emotion between people.

The stage design is simple,
but the trapdoors are everywhere
and always set at interesting locations.
The stage works in an uncomplicated way.
So go and watch it!
(It'll be in Taipei in November!)

to converse with the life and culture of Taiwan.

『Treasure Trove』, the theme this year,
jumped out from the past name rules.
(50 Ideal Benches, 50 Manners...etc)
It continues on digging into the culture of Tainan,
back to the basic "use", to create an eternal value.

This year, Rolling Inn is honored that
the designs of "Treasure Trove" were shot here.
Thanks to Kiki, one of the planning team,

Bridge Over Troubled Water

I’d like to talk about something that has no direct connection to Tainan.

A few days ago, a teacher asked me

if I’m interested in a documentary film’s premier.

It’s called “Bridge Over Troubled Water”.

Although it’s not something that has great cast or huge budget,

it’s indeed a movie that makes you cry, laugh and moved,

a good documentary film that worth recommending.

The background is village Kiaxian after Typhoon Morakot,

which is totally a catastrophe several years ago.
Shiaolin village which is more upstream didn’t survive in that disaster,
Jiaxian did, but lost its hope and shine.

The bad environment made the children precocious and sensible.

The students of Jiaxian Elementary School stood out.

Regardless of the bad environment,
without good equipments,
they even had to borrow shoes for the competition.

They coach tied the rope on the tree,

so that the students can keep practicing with the undefeated opponent.

They did not complain.

All the effort they made is just for one reason

---to honor Jiaxian.

The effort they made, finally brought the adults the passion back.

They started to think, why did they give up?

The students returned silently,
when the bus arrived at the Jiaxian Bridge,

it’s their first time to be welcomed like heroes.

Feeling touched with the students in the film,

Countless people in the cinema bursted into tears.

Another main discussion in the film is about foreign brides.

Most of them didn’t know the situation here,

young girls came and started working

without even a wedding.

They didn’t pay less than Taiwanese.

Cook “flavor meal”for the kids every week,
work hard on fundamental industries...

In this wounded place,
the boundary between local and foreign became blurred.

There’s a very impressive scene,
the director asked a little girl,
“Did President Ma Ying- Jeou helped you?”

“You mean 119?”

(Taiwanese emergency relief number, sounds similar to president‘s name)
“
Ma Ying-Jeou, not yi-yi-jeou(119)”

“Who exactly Ma Ying-Jeou is?!”

I personally think it’s bot just adding something funny,
but showing the helpless situation.

In a kid’s mind who lives in a mountain village,
Politics is something too far away.

President has lots of thing to deal with,
so they can barely see him.

Compared with the 119, which shows up as long as you call,

no wonder the kid knows only 119, not the president.

At the end of the film,
the local institute hosted a wedding for them,

let them wear wedding dresses,
make-up,
gave them a more concrete impression about “getting married”.

It’s making their dream come true,

and appreciate their hard-working as well.

The director shared a lot after the film.

He said he never thought,
“Kids make adults moved”

sounds like something in a Miyazaki Jun’s animation film,

could really exist in the world.

The director also said,

it’s hard to make a documentary film.

Needs a lot of works,
 can barely earn money back.

He always think “This is the last documentary film I made”
But every time when somebody tell him,

his films are so touching,
he would consider, maybe one more?!

Thanks to the lovely and respectable people like them,

don’t care about the fame,

make people in every corner are able to be seen, be heard.

Pay our deepest respect
to the hard-working Director Yang and his team,
to everyone who spare no effort in every place.
To Jiaxian. And to Taiwan.

Hayashi Department Store reopening

30th June, 2013, is a big day of Tainan.

After three years of restoration,

Hayashi Department Store,

the so-called “5-storey building”,

the oldest department store which now exists,

is finally reopen, so that the people who expected for long

can go inside, and see its peerless charm.

Hayashi Department Store was established 81 years ago

by Mr. Hayashi, in Japanese colonial period.

It’s the first department store in Tainan,
and it’s also the 2nd department store in Taiwan,

only 2 days later than Kikumoto Department Store in Taipei.

Hayashi Department Store is located on Zhongzheng Rd.

People compared this area to “Ginza”(Japan)

it’s clear how prosperous it was.

And Hayashi Department Store,
which equipped with the first elevator in southern Taiwan,
was indeed the representation of popular.

The view through the window, one day before opening.

29th June, one day before the reopening,

I decided to go around there.

And I suddenly found that there are several people there,

couldn’t wait until the next day, just like me.

Hayashi Department Store and Land Bank,
the two beatiful historical buildings stand oppositely.

I tried to shoot it from the bottom,

it looked extra huge in the blue sky that day.

On the official opening day,

visitors crowded Hayashi Department Store.
After Tainan mayor‘s speech,
the simple opening ceremony
announced
the reopening of Hayashi Department Store.

Taiwan New Style Folk Dance
delivered a performance“Showa Modern”

to re-create a day in Hayashi Department Store by dancing.

The reconstruction of Hayashi Department Store is very detailed,

it’s easy to see the team’s effort and persistence
from floor, wall, lighting... to the elevator that catches everyone’s eyes.

Elevator

The patio is stunning as well

The floor, wall and lighting are all really exquisite.

Although it’s called “5-storey building”,
there are actually 5 and half floors.
Several WWII bullet holes were remained on the top floor walls,
show the original look of it.

Mr. Hayashi’s daughter-in-law‘s oral history
also helped the reconstruction of the Shrine’s Torii.

Although the beam couldn’t be constructed because the lack of certain sizes,

we’re still one step closer to the restoration of history.

Standing on the top floor and look down,

we’re at the commanding point several decades ago.
Although this city has changed a lot,
but it should be the same feeling while standing here.

Thanks for so many people willing to respect

the preservation of historical sites,
and the effort the team has made,
giving us a chance to experience the Showa taste,
and let the grandpas and grandmas
who went through the time
to experience the splendid old time again.

A grandma look through the window, love this picture very much

It’s a great luck of Tainan to have such a good thing.

Hopefully the conscious of preserve can grow bigger,
so that more and more old buildings, stuffs will be remained.

Hayashi Department Store will stay opened until the end of August,

and reborn as a department store of
cultural and creative industry.

Please mind the deadline if you wanna visit!

Chinese Valentine's Day

Today is "Chi-Shi",
the 7th day of the 7th month according to lunar calendar,
is so-called Chinese Valentine's Day.
No matter you're in love or single,
Rolling Inn sends our best wishes to all of you,
hope that everybody can be happy!!

Chi-shi is also called begging festival,
it originates from a traditional tale in ancient China.
It is said that,
the cowherd and the weaving maid,
who were separated on different sides of the milky way,
can meet up on a magpie bridge.
Therefore, women used to pray for good marriage.
So Chi-Shi was more like a Girls' Day.

Chi-Shi is a traditional festival for all Chinese and East Asia.
Besides the western Valentine's Day,
isn't it great to have one more Valentine's Day to celebrate:)
Rolling Inn wish you a Happy “Chi-Shi” Valentine's Day!!!

Happy Father's Day!!!

Happy Father's Day to all the papas!!

8th August,
is Taiwanese Father's Day.
In Taiwan, most daddies play serious roles in their families,
and many of them aren't good at expressing their emotions.
In such a special day,
don't forget to let your dad know
how much you appreciate him!

http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%88%B6%E8%A6%AA%E7%AF%80

But do you know that
only Taiwanese celebrate Father's Day on 8th August?!
Taiwanese choose this day
because the "pa"of papa & "8" [ba] are homonyms in Chinese,
but not in other languages.
Other countries choose different days for different reasons.
If you're interested in this,
check out the wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Father%27s_Day

We wish you a HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

Taiwanrun, run to Tainan

At first, I was just trying to help, didn’t expect it would be such an interesting thing.

At the end of June, my Taiwanese friend Kae who I met in Germany told me that
her German friend in Taiwan was going to start a crazy plan - they’re going to run
around the island, all on foot. I told her, if they need help in Tainan, they can ask
me. And I knew it later on, that they’re quite famous because they tried to collect
one million Likes on facebook for their plan.

“Go around the island with NT$1000 and Taiwan national flag and raise money”,
the news and comments were both positive and negative. I talked about it with
Kae, and she told me that, after the news came out, they found out that their
motivation of “Run for the love for Taiwan”  has blurred, so they cancelled fundraising,
simply to experience, and of course not just with NT$1000(In my opinion, I would
say it’s just an exaggeration of little budget). It’s such a pity that no following info
was reported, it should be hard for people to realize.

19:00 on 19 July, I suddenly got a message from Kae, she said that they would
probably arrive tainan in a couple of hours, but they were still in Hunei, not sure if
they can arrive. After making sure that we have room for them, they decided to
come, but would be around 23:30.

We started to prepare at 22:00, also informed other guests, and then we waited at
the glass café. About 23:40, Sebastian from Germany, David from Guatemala and
David from Taiwan, showed up outside the door. I can feel their  tiredness while
talking to them, so we explained quickly and let them go for a rest.

Later on, they posted a message on FB to show they lived in Rolling Inn. And I got
a call from their fan, to make sure if they really were here. I told Kae immediately
after the call, saying that they truely got fans! Both of us felt cool about this.

Enthusiastic fans! Fan service after breakfast

Around 9 in the next morning, while mom and I waited at the glass café, a boy and
a girl came, and he’s the fan that called me last night. I invited them to come in, cook
coffee for them. And they volunteered to prepare breakfast for the three, buying the
sticky rice on Guohua Street that we suggested, and we went buying veggie rice
dumplings & miso soup. Sebastian said the sticky rice was amazing, and we were
surprised to hear David from Guatemala said the miso soup remind him of the food
in his country!

After they finished breakfast, I asked them, what’s their opinions about all the positive
and negative comments, and what kind of mood were they in while doing so. They told
me, at first they feel sad because they were misunderstood as abusing Taiwanese’s
friendliness, but they can’t go down because of the bad comments, “We’re running for
the people who are willing to support us”, so did they say.

Took a photo together as well

Started from the love for Taiwan, wanna stay here and launch a company, and it
definitely need more money. The fundraising is spontaneous, if you can agree with
them, you can give, if you can’t, just don’t do it. It’s simply a choice.

Start thinking about it from a simple point, no matter they’re foreigners or Taiwanese,
to finish running around the island in one month, is not a easy thing. To complete it,
they have to insist on running or walking 40 km every day, and have to hold on with
their willpower while feeling tired. Somebody said they’re trying to be famous, maybe
they do become celebrities, but there are many other ways to achieve, they don't have
to choose such a difficult way.

New guests are also following their news!

It’s something that need perseverance and strong will to complete, I believe they must
have met so many interesting things and new friends. Now the adventure is coming
to the end, and they’re sparing no effort to complete it. Also, they’re planning to arrive
Taipei 101 in the evening of 30 July, sincerely hope that people can give them more
encouragement, and may their following adventure goes really well !!!

Surprise! Tissue boxes!

Big big package, the receiver is my grandpa.

In the morning of 5th June,
the first Monday after the tea party,
We received a big package.
Actually the sender has told me once,
but I totally forgot to tell others,
that's why it became a big surprise.

Tissue boxes in 5 different colors!

The big pack contained 5 beautiful wood tissue boxes,

Here comes our 'Full-Month" Tea Party!!!!

To celebrate that Rolling Inn has opened for one month,
we're holding a Full-Month Tea Party on 1st June!

We chose the red egg as our leading role in the DM.
According to the traditional custom,
after the baby was born for one month,
the family will prepare red eggs, sticky rice (oil rice)
for relatives and friends,
to announce that this baby's already "full-month",
and pray for the auspiciousness.

At 13:30 on 1st June,
we'll prepare delicious snacks and drink
(and it's said there will be homemade salty taro cakes!)
and play the LPs on the spot.
No matter you've come or not, or know us or not,
you're all welcome to join and celebrate with us!!!!

Happy Mother's Day!!!

Today is the annual Mother's Day,
an extremely important day.
We took several pictures which carnations play the main role,
but in the end we still chose this photo.
The white bench in the background is lying on the 1F outdoor platform,
and it's actually reformed by a baby crib. We all lay on it,
hearing the lalluby mom sings and grew up.

In fact we should appreciate our moms not only on Mother's Day,but every day.
Because we wouldn't even be here without our moms.
All the best wishes and Happy Mother's Day to all the mommies!!!!!

Opening!!!

Rolling Inn selected 5th May, 2013 as our opening day,
we decided not to have a grand scale opening ceremony,
just to suit the low-key personality of the house,
which stayed humbly and silently in the small alley.
So we simply worshiped and set off firecrackers,
announcing that we started from now on!
My uncle said, it looks more hearty if we prepare bigger
size drinks!

The day before our opening,
my dad and uncle decided to take out the LP player,
which was stored because of the lack of space.
"It's not easy to repair it, we'd like to play it for our guests.",
so did they say.
We started to reform the bottom drawer as a table for the LP player,
and it was finished at about nightfall.

We started worshiping at midday,
praying that everything can go well.
An uncle couple came very early to celebrate the opening,
they planed to go to Douliou in the noon for baseball game,
but stayed longer till 14:00.
(And, please support our CPBL!!!)

The uncle couple are lovely, they came to help before
going to to the baseball game.

While waiting for the incense to burn,
we sat in the glass house,
drank fresh made coffee and listened to the LP.
The sound of LP came out from the speaker
with a hazy beauty.
It has a little bit defects
and the tone quality can not be compared with modern CD,
but it's so real and there's an aroma of the old times.
It's definitely not perfect, but Intoxicating.

The LP has an aroma of the old times

We started to burn the god money after the incenses are finished,
and then set off firecrackers in front of the two doors,
announcing our opening!
Thanks for all the friends who came to make it prosperous,
and the new friends who passed by but came in
as the door was open :)

Setting off firecrackers to announce our opening!

We'll have a full-month tea party at the beginning of June,
You're all welcome to come and celebrate with us!!
